Savanah Carrasquillo

Savanah Carrasquillo, a Spelman College student pursuing a degree in History with a minor in Secondary Education, serves as a Visitor Engagement Intern with the National Parks of Boston through the HBCUI Internship Program.

Prior to her internship, Savanah developed extensive leadership, education, and community engagement experience through her involvement at Spelman College. As an Intramural Sports Supervisor, she helps coordinate programming and supervises a team of referees and scorekeepers while contributing to the growth of campus recreational opportunities. She also serves as a Resident Advisor, supporting first-year students as they transition into college life and creating programs designed to strengthen community and student development. In addition, Savanah serves as Vice President of the Spelman College History Club and is a member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., where she participates in community service initiatives benefiting both the Spelman campus and the greater Atlanta community.

During her internship with the National Parks of Boston, Savanah works at the Boston African American National Historic Site, helping visitors explore the people, places, and stories that shaped Black history in Boston. She delivers interpretive talks and guided tours, creates interactive educational activities for diverse audiences, and supports visitor engagement along the Black Heritage Trail. Working alongside National Park Service staff and the Museum of African American History, she contributes to daily site operations and public programming while helping visitors develop a deeper understanding of Boston’s African American history and its broader significance in the American story.

The internship strengthens Savanah’s skills in historical research, public speaking, interpretation, education, and audience engagement while allowing her to explore new ways of making history meaningful and accessible to the public. Her long-term academic interests include pursuing graduate study in Special Education, with a focus on Deaf and Hard of Hearing students, or earning a Ph.D. in History to contribute to research on African Americans with disabilities during the Antebellum period. Through her work with the National Parks of Boston, Savanah is building upon her passion for history, education, and public service while gaining valuable experience connecting research with the communities and audiences it can inspire.
