SHORT BIOGRAPHY
Introducing Khalil Baker, a Hiram, Georgia native and 2022 graduate of Hampton University. In 2024, Khalil served as the Natural Resources Monitoring Intern at Rocky Mountain National Park through the Historically Black Colleges and Universities Internship Program (HBCUI).
This internship marked the fourth chapter in Khalil’s professional journey, following previous internships at Jamestown National Historical Park, Appomattox Court House National Historical Park, and Brown v. Board of Education National Historic Site.
During his internship, Khalil monitored and collected data at the park’s air quality monitoring stations, maintained Rocky Mountain National Park’s interpretive ozone garden, and presented educational pop-up programs for visitors focused on air quality issues affecting the park. He also assisted with developing outreach and messaging materials related to natural resource management, helping connect scientific research and stewardship efforts with public education.

Views from Rocky Mountain National Park by Khalil Baker
As part of the 2024 HBCUI Career and Leadership Workshop, Khalil Baker participated in the program’s inaugural Cultural Art Showcase. The exhibit highlighted the contributions and legacy of African Americans in the United States and the National Park Service through original artwork created by HBCUI interns. Khalil’s featured piece, Forgotten Signature, honored the individuals whose contributions have helped shape history, yet are often absent from the historical record.
