2024 HBCUI Intern
BIOGRAPHY
Brooklyn Pitre, a Memphis, Tennessee native and graduate of Bethune-Cookman University with a degree in Mass Communications, served as a Visitor Services Assistant at Castillo de San Marcos National Monument through the HBCUI Internship Program in 2024.
A dedicated student leader, communicator, and community advocate, Brooklyn held numerous leadership roles throughout her collegiate career. Among her many accomplishments, she served as the 71st Miss Bethune-Cookman University, Homecoming Queen, Presidential Scholar, Vice President of What’s Next Dance, Community Service Chairwoman for Sister 2 Sister Lotus, and a member of the National Association of Black Journalists and the National Council of Negro Women. Her experiences reflect a strong commitment to leadership, service, mentorship, and community engagement.
Prior to her internship at Castillo de San Marcos National Monument, Brooklyn participated in internship opportunities with the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute and St. Jude ALSAC, experiences that helped develop her interests in public engagement, communications, and educational outreach.
During her internship, Brooklyn supported visitor services and interpretation efforts while helping connect visitors with the history and significance of the nation’s oldest masonry fort. She utilized her strengths in communication, community engagement, and storytelling to enhance visitor experiences and contribute to the park’s educational mission.
Through this experience, Brooklyn gained valuable insight into public history, visitor engagement, and the role national parks play in preserving and sharing America’s cultural heritage. Her internship further strengthened her passion for communications, leadership, and public service.

Poster Presentation – Career & Leadership Workshop

Through an interactive poster presentation, she shared her experiences and accomplishments as a Visitor Services Assistant at Castillo de San Marcos National Monument. Her presentation highlighted the importance of visitor engagement, interpretation, and educational outreach in helping connect audiences to the history and significance of one of America’s oldest historic sites.
