BIOGRAPHY
Joel Murchison, an Atlanta, Georgia native and graduate of Jackson State University, served as an Assistant Interpretive Curator Intern at Mammoth Cave National Park through the HBCUI Internship Program in 2024.
Throughout his academic career, Joel demonstrated a strong commitment to leadership, communications, public engagement, and creative storytelling. He served in numerous leadership roles and participated in nationally recognized fellowships and professional development programs that focused on entrepreneurship, media, technology, and community impact. His passion for helping creatives grow their brands and connect with audiences provided a unique perspective to his work within the National Park Service.
During his internship, Joel worked with the Environmental Education and Interpretation Divisions to develop educational materials focused on the history of tourism and early visitors to Mammoth Cave. His primary project involved creating a poster exhibit and supporting presentation materials designed to expand public understanding of the park’s historical significance. Through research, interpretation, and public engagement efforts, Joel helped connect visitors with the stories that shaped one of America’s most iconic national parks.
The experience provided Joel with new perspectives on public history, education, and interpretation while strengthening his communication and storytelling skills. His internship reinforced the value of connecting diverse audiences to history through engaging and accessible educational experiences.

Poster Presentation – Career & Leadership Workshop in DC

Through an interactive poster presentation, he shared the research and interpretive work he completed at Mammoth Cave National Park, highlighting the history of tourism and early visitors to the cave. His presentation demonstrated how educational exhibits and storytelling can help visitors better understand the park’s rich cultural and historical significance.

INTERN REFLECTION
Reflecting on his internship experience, Joel shared how stepping outside of his traditional career interests opened the door to new opportunities, perspectives, and professional growth. His time at Mammoth Cave National Park introduced him to new avenues of public engagement and interpretation while reinforcing the importance of remaining open to unexpected experiences and possibilities.
